The Várfok Gallery was founded immediately after the political transition, in 1990, by Károly Szalóky under the name Várfok 14 Műhelygaléria. It is therefore one of the oldest privately owned contemporary art galleries in Hungary.
The first exhibition space was established in a former coal cellar on Várfok Street. This basement venue became the cradle of the extensive institutional network that the Várfok Gallery would later develop.
Over the past three and a half decades, following numerous institutional and structural transformations, the gallery has grown into an exhibition space of nearly 300 square metres, welcoming visitors to a dynamic programme of contemporary art.
Its roster includes some of the leading figures of contemporary Hungarian art alongside artists who have earned recognition and respect throughout both the European and global art communities.
